Winners of the 2015 Deutsche Bank Challenge: Antuan Tran, Sandra Raquel Ruiz Rojas, Alex Yang, Oscar Manuel Pacheco De la Vega
Project Description: The Deutsche Bank Challenge (DBC) offers Harvard and UTEC science/engineering student the unique opportunity to collaborate on a joint project of importance to disadvantaged communities in Peru. Students will work collaboratively together in an international setting to optimize perspective and skill sets. Students will develop their own ideas but Harvard and UTEC professors will be available to advise. Through this program, the DBC endeavors to build a framework for encouraging and training 21st Century leaders in science and engineering by (1) investing in students with the potential and drive to affect sustainable and positive social impact, (2) establishing a successful and lasting scheme for international collaborations, (3) creating awareness for the disparity between developed and developing countries, and (4) promoting innovation and problem solving. Proposal with the highest social impact will be selected. The whole collaboration will be conducted in English. APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED from 2016 JANUARY 4 – APRIL 1. 6 months will be allotted for project completion from disbursement of funds.
Funds: Winning team will receive USD 20,000 to be spent on the project.
Topics/challenges of interest are the following:
1. Low-cost food supplements to decrease malnutrition.
2. Improvement of thermal comfort in Andean houses.
3. Point-of-use water purification systems for people without basic services.
4. Remote diagnosis of tropical diseases (e. g. malaria, dengue, tuberculosis).
5. Low-cost educational devices for facilitating STEM
6. A challenge your team has identified as critical to Peru but not listed here.
