UTEC and the “Cátedra Vargas Llosa” present the Premio Bienal de Novela “Mario Vargas Llosa”.

​On Friday, April 5th, Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología (UTEC) and the “Cátedra Vargas Llosa” (Vargas Llosa Lecture Series) presented the Premio Bienal de Novela “Mario Vargas Llosa (“Mario Vargas Llosa” Biennial Novel Awards) at the MAC - Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Lima (Contemporary Art Museum of Lima).The “Cátedra Vargas Llosa”, a joint initiative of Spanish and Latin American universities to spread the study of Hispanic American culture and literature; and Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología (UTEC), an educational concept that seeks a more comprehensive education for future engineers, with cultured, critical thinking, organized the Premio Bienal de Novela “Mario Vargas Llosa”, with the attendance of author Mario Vargas Llosa, Eduardo Hochschild - Chairman of the Board of UTEC-, and Juan Jesus Armas Marcelo, director of the Cátedra Vargas LlosaThe purpose of the award is to recognize the best novel published in the Spanish language between 2012 and 2013, and awarding the author the sum of US$100,000. To choose the winning novel, an invitation is extended to all writers and publishers throughout the hispanic world, who are asked to submit their novels in the established time lapse.The selection and award ceremony shall be held in March 2014 and will have a panel of judges integrated by renowned personalities from the literary world, such as Brazilian novelist Nélida Piñón, the Mexican critic and essayist, Christopher Domínguez Michael, Chilean critic David Gallagher, Peruvian author and poet Marco Matos (Chairman of the Peruvian Academy of Language), the Director of the Instituto Cervantes in Spain, Victor García de la Concha, and the director of the Cátedra Vargas Llosa, Juan Jesús Armas Marcelo, who will be acting as secretary with the right to express an opinion but not to vote.During the award week, a series of activities will be held by the finalists and the panel of judges, giving lectures, or keynote speeches in which they establish a dialogue with the audience that stimulates interest for literature and writing.The “Mario Vargas Llosa” Biennial Book Award is the first literary award held in Peru, which positions the country at the epicenter of literary creation, revitalizing the Spanish language as the best narrative in today’s world.
