The Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología (UTEC), through its Centro de Investigación y Tecnología del Agua (CITA), will develop the project "Scientific evaluation of the shape and flow of the river: reference information for the infrastructure guidelines in the Peruvian Amazon", with a fund of approximately $2 million from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, which is part of the organization Andes-Amazon Initiative program.
This study will last two years and will allow us to understand the rivers and understand the potential impact of interventions in the Amazonian ecosystem. Likewise, the academic and governmental community will benefit from technical and scientific contributions, thanks to the methodologies developed during the research. Also, the Amazonian communities will be able to understand the natural processes of the rivers and their relationship with the Amazonian worldview.
Dr. Jorge Abad, who is also UTEC Provost and Director of CITA, is the main coordinator of the project. "For UTEC, research and development (R&D) constitute a fundamental step for the solution of the problems of the future. As a result, we are conducting the first baseline study that characterizes the natural hydrodynamics of the Amazonian rivers", says Dr. Abad.
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation fosters innovative scientific discoveries, conservation of the environment, improvements in patient care and the preservation of the special character of the San Francisco Bay Area in California. Within the Andes-Amazon Initiative program, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation supports efforts that allow indigenous lands and protected areas in the Amazon to have the financing and necessary management mechanisms for their long-term functionality.
