UTEC has a research team with international research experience. They have participated in important projects for different agencies, such as: Air Force Research Labs (AFRL), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), University of New Mexico (UNM), Vision Quest Biomedical, Florida International University (FIU), Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives (CEA), Institut de Systèmes Intelligents et de Robotique (ISIR), National Science Foundation(NSF), Harvard University, University of Delaware, Universidad de La Laguna (ULL), Institut für Solarenergieforschung Hameln (ISFH), and Aalborg University (AAU, Denmark).
They offer their experience to different companies and institutions in areas such as:
Energy: Optimizing the use of electric power (Smart Grid).
Environment: Monitoring, analysis and processing of environmental information.
Chemistry: Development and use of new materials as coating for industrial equipment. Use of precious metal nanoparticles to transform natural resources into value added products. Extraction and characterization of bioactive natural products.
Electronics: Laser technology applied in mining to increase drilling speed and reduce maintenance costs.
Digital image processing: analysis, processing and detection of images in different components of the spectrum: color, infrared, magnetic, ultrasound.
Mechanics and Materials: Design and prototyping of mechatronic and robotic systems, and structures made of composite materials. Development of new materials for engineering, study and analysis of failure mechanism of materials used in engineering (static and dynamic), material degradation and optimization of structural systems, among the main ones.
All of these research fields and others related to engineering offer many topics and opportunities to carry out research projects at graduate level.
