Civil Engineers work towards improving our way of life by building and designing innovative infrastructures. These are some examples of civil engineering works that have made a large impact in the world.
Burj Khalifa (United Arab Emirates)
The tallest building in the world is 828 meters tall and was built over a firm 500 meters concrete base reinforced in steel to make it lighter. Its foundation is also the largest in the world and its built with a 1,5m diameter and 50m tall rods.
The great wall of China(China)
This great work of engineering took over 2000 years to be completed and has now been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It was built to prevent foreign invasions and to unite the different Chinese kingdoms. Even though it has changed a lot through the years its estimated to be approximately 21,000kms long and 1,535m over sea level at its highest point.
Skywalk (Estados Unidos)
Grand Canyon’s viewpoint has a 22 meters long glass walkway. It’s over 10 centimeters thickness allow visitors to have a great view of the 1,300 meters of canyon dept. It is also built to resist the weight of 800 people at once and to endure winds up to 160 kilometers. This impressive work of engineering was inaugurated in 2007.
Gotthard Road Tunnel (Suiza)
The longest train tunnel in the world was built between 1872 and 882 with the objective of uniting north and south Europe. It was initially 15 kilometers long but in 2016, after several years of work, it was re inaugurated with a length of 57,09 kilometers. It goes under the Alps from Göschenen to Airolo.
The Panama Canal
It is considered to be the most important work of engineering of the 21st century, it’s a navigation route that connects the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean cutting through Panama.
Its size doubled in 2007 when the new locks were installed, it is now 427 meters long and 55 meters wide. Even though it is now a larger structure it has managed to reduce its environmental impact and it now recovers 60% of the water it uses thanks to its three large reservoirs. Ships take around an hour and a half to go through each one of the locks and around eighteen hours to get though its total length of 74 kilometers.
