The modern Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología (UTEC) campus located in the District of Barranco in Lima, was recently awarded LEED certification, the most respected global recognition granted by the US Green Building Council or USGBC) to sustainable buildings, recognizing the construction of environmentally responsible spaces with designs that permit the efficient use of natural resources.
UTEC, which refers to innovation, design and creativity, was awarded certification in the category of New Construction at the Silver level for having achieved a construction that demonstrates high-energy efficiency and sustainability at zero cost. Inaugurated in December of 2015, the university campus permits the optimization of consumption through innovative design and systems strategies.
“At UTEC we work so that “ingenuity in action”, the search for creative and practical solutions to relevant problems, constitutes a part of everything we do. The sustainable campus design, now recognized with the LEED certification, is a good example of what we live and experience every day at the university”, says Enrique Stiglich, UTEC Director of Administration and Finance.
The campus was designed in a way that took wind direction and speed into account to provide comfortable spaces without the need to implement a mechanical ventilation system. Similarly, the building’s position and architecture considered sunlight and shade trends to help generate maximum electrical energy savings. As a result of both of these actions, the building saves up to 19% less electrical power consumption and up to 41% less water consumption. In addition, 34% of the materials used for its construction contain recycled materials.
As the reader may recall, the UTEC campus is considered one of the most modern campuses in Latin America due to its infrastructure and advanced technology. In addition, its architectural
