UTEC Board Member and Professor Kim Vandiver leads workshop for high school students

On the afternoon of May 2nd, UTEC Board Member and Dean of Undergraduate Research at MI, Dr. Kim Vandiver and his spouse, Dr. Kathleen Vandiver, herself a scientist, visited Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School to lead a workshop designed for junior and senior high school students.The event was attended by: Roosevelt, Markham, and San Silvestre high school students who came with their teachers and some of the directors from of their academic institutions. The topics addressed by Dr. Vandiver covered vibration theory and understanding musical instruments under this theory. He was even able to give a practical demonstration on the connection between the vibration of individual guitar strings.In turn, scientist Kathleen discussed air components and the role of CO2 in climate changes, in addition to the adverse effects of air pollution on health.  Employing a practical method, she used LEGOs so the young students could better understand the composition of air.This event also benefited from the active participation of students in the audience, who upon completion of the workshop gave presentations of various research projects to the Vandivers and were able to request their valuable feedback and insight.
