Peru seeks to enhance its reputation in biomedical equipment development and design and this is being reflected in the applied research project that is being conducted by a UTEC multi-disciplinary team of researchers. The purpose of the project is to develop a new clinical procedure and biomedical equipment that enables the early detection of pressure sores (bed sores) in a non-invasive and reliable manner.
“Pressure Ulcers have serious side effects for the individual which can be psychological, physical and social in nature, affecting the person’s health, well-being and quality of life” says Julio Valdivia, M.D., surgeon and project researcher.
“The Equipment is different from other existing technologies because it processes thermographic images, using machine learning algorithms which results in the early detection of Pressure Sores”, says Luis Pena, a teacher in UTEC’s Industrial Engineering Program, and project manager and coordinator.
It is worth mentioning that the research team is made up of Julio Valdivia, PhD in Biomedical Science and Astrobiology; Wilver Aiquipa, Systems Engineer and PhD in Bioengineering; in addition to the following UTEC teaching faculty members: Oscar Ramos, with degrees in Industrial and Electronic Engineering and a PhD in Robotics; Maria Belen Ortiz, B.S. and M.S. in Industrial Engineering; and Juan Carlos Chavez, B.S. Industrial Design. In addition the project will receive the participation of other professionals in the fields of innovation and graphic design, as well as university students.
