INSPIRATIONAL PEOPLE
Environmental engineering
She was home-schooled in her early years.
studied mathematics, Latin, French and German. Because she was much in demand as a tutor and the income earned doing this made it possible for her to further her studies.
she established the WOMAN’S LABORATORY DE MIT, and assisted the professor who ran it. She taught chemistry and mineralogy.
after graduating from Vassar College, she was accepted at MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY.
before her 25th birthday and having saved enough money, VASSAR COLLEGE, classified as a special student. In this stimulating environment, she was attracted to astronomy and chemistry.
she was recognized by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers as their first female member.
In those years she devoted most of her energy to environmental studies analyzing the air, water and soil quality.
at the request of the Massachusetts State Board of Health, she performed a survey of the quality of the inland bodies of water, many of which were polluted.
Richards and her colleague A. G. Woodman wrote a classic text in the field of sanitary engineering: “Air, Water and Food from a Sanitary Standpoint
Thanks to her work, the state of Massachusetts established the FIRST WATER QUALITY STANDARDS IN AMÉRICA Her accomplishments were the basis for further advances in water treatment.
She determined water quality through chemical analysis, which was used and later improved to test THE PURITY OF WATER AND AIR.
She performed numerous experiments in mineralogy, INCLUDING THE DISCOVERY OF UNKNOWN ELEMENTS IN SAMARSKITE, LATER IDENTIFIED AS SAMARIUM AND GADOLINIUM, used in the ceramics and domestic refrigeration industries, respectively.
