Studying in another country is an eye opening experience that increases your social awareness, provides you with new technical expertise, and innovative tools and skills. Being surrounded by another culture, history and language is a fun and exciting experience. It is the best way to increase intercultural awareness and global understanding. The benefits of studying abroad in our global economy are not only important, but essential to strengthen excellence in an increasingly international environment.
We are one of Peru’s most innovative engineering universities and you can choose from a wide range of courses taught in English. At UTEC you will gain the skills and knowledge to solve tomorrow´s world challenges. With a strong emphasis on research and innovation, we create a new generation of engineers to lead the industry and contribute to the technologies of the future.
Students at UTEC are very friendly so it will be easy to make native Peruvian friends and be immersed in the local culture. We are located in the city center just blocks away from the beach and all of the main attractions.
After close consultation with your academic advisor, courses taken at UTEC will be accredited at your home university and you will earn the respective credits for those courses towards the completion of your degree.
Below you will find a list of classes that are taught in English. We expect you to be enrolled full-time, which means you will take about 20 credits (4-6 courses) and will complete all academic requirements. Our credit system might vary slightly from your home university but earned credits at UTEC will be transferred back to your home university by taking into account the equivalency of the credit scale at your home university. Exchange students are also welcome to take classes in Spanish if they have the required level (a prior exam will be given to test your level). At the end of the semester transcripts will be sent directly to your university.
Our 5 Undergraduate Engineering Schools are:
International Student Peer Mentorship Program
The programs assist our incoming international students to successfully transition and integrate to life in Lima and at UTEC. We match current local students with incoming international students to create small communities of support based on similar academic interests. Through guided peer-to-peer mentoring, students empower each other to create community and feel connected to their new environment.
The mentors will reach out to the incoming international students to answer questions before they leave their home countries and during their stay at UTEC. The peer mentorship program will organize a variety of activities as well as one-on-one conversations with their mentor. Mentors will introduce and connect their mentees to campus and help them make the most out of their experience in Lima at UTEC.
Student Activities
During the semester there are various events on campus such as guest speakers, workshops, sports tournaments and sometimes fun activities like concerts and bus trips to certain places, along with a variety of other activities that you may enjoy. On our website you will find all the information that you need regarding activities, and/or events that happen on campus. Getting involved with these sorts of things will ensure that you get to meet a lot of cool people. Overall, there are a lot of things for you to do, no matter what day of the week it is. There are also a number of festivals and sporting events that go on throughout the country.
Throughout the semester, you can take part in the following activities organized by the Internationalization Office.
“You could immediately tell the collaborative process was the top priority for students and professors alike. The exchange of information and ideas was refreshing and ultimately very helpful for our project as we relied on the expertise of those not just on our team but across the university to aid our design and creative process.” Alex Yang, Harvard Student, SEAS, August 2016
“I had a wonderful experience at UTEC; I enjoyed collaborating with Peruvian students, learning about their culture, and working together to tackle complex social issues through engineering. Thanks to the support from UTEC and DRCLAS, we were able to meet with our potential clients to discuss the issues they face in depth, and utilize the incredible resources at UTEC to develop our product. “Haley Baker, Harvard Student, August 2016

IMPORTANT:
Our program gives students the opportunity for academic and personal growth. It provides an opportunity for them to challenge themselves and to experience the world from a new perspective. On site staff assists with housing; academic, cultural, and social components of the program and helps students adjust to their new environment.
Academics
Students are registered for program courses through their home university and will earn the respective credits towards their degree. All students should discuss how the study abroad courses fit into their overall academic goals and degree requirements with their academic advisors.
We expect all students to be fully engaged in the academic program. Attendance at class sessions and course-related events is mandatory. In case of absence for illness or for a planned religious observance, the student should communicate with the program’s resident director. All course requirements must be completed before the student departs the program site.
Usually internships can last from 1 to 3 months, depending on the program enrollment, and expect you to work 30 hours per week for the duration of the program. Most internships are in Spanish but in some cases an English speaking internship is possible. Internships are available in a variety of areas in the field of engineering and technology including mining, gas, construction, energy, food, agriculture, education, fishing, textile and automotive industry, banking and finance, along with others. UTEC has ties with many businesses that provide high quality internships in Lima and other cities.
UTEC’s career services team will work closely with you to help find a suitable internship to match your interests and goals. Your program advisor will offer advice regarding specific options to help you make decisions. The type of work will vary depending on the placement, but you will be given substantive work that will provide you with entry-level professional experience. All internships will be documented, reviewed, and evaluated to highlight relevant activities and accomplishments to prospective employers.
Only once you have been admitted to UTEC can we evaluate the possibility of an internship. Be aware that the internship has to be either before or after your semester at UTEC but not during your semester. UTEC´s role is to facilitate contact with businesses but cannot guarantee if there will be internship positions available.
